Nordine Sajot • Omnivore - L'onnivoro
On Wednesday, November 6 at 6:00 PM, the solo exhibition of young French artist Nordine Sajot (Paris, 1975), titled Omnivore - L’Onnivoro, will open in our spaces. The artist presents a series of works (installations, sculptures, videos, and photographs) related to food, understood as a theme that concerns both humanity and the world as a whole—a theme through which it is possible to explore identity and difference, who we are, what we want. Social and cultural history, the history of physiological evolution, and psychohistory all find, around the table, a point of convergence: we are a complex unity in which the biological and cultural components intertwine, influence one another, and develop in parallel.
Man grows and evolves by feeding on what he finds around him: food, customs, thoughts, habits. And it is no coincidence that today, more and more often, at our solitary, convivial, or traditionally family table, there sits a not-at-all discreet intruder: television.
A leading protagonist on the contemporary scene, TV dominates—with its antennas—the visible landscape and mountaintops, insinuating itself into our daily lives while eluding any fair opposition, in order to promote a utilitarian and hedonistic model of life in which everything is greedily consumed and turns into waste even before it can be critically examined.
Thus, while for much of the surrounding world satiety still represents a dream to be attained, much of the West finds itself omnivorous and voracious, populated by digestive channels through which edible products and goods of all kinds, information and images, cultural trends, emotions, desires, and entertainment are incessantly consumed.
On the table now, alongside cutlery, napkin, and bowl of soup, there’s also a place for the remote control.
