Cristina Show

Students of Aldo Spoldi at Accademia di Brera

16.01.2000 - 12.02.2000

To Paolo Uccello, who is said to have lived with the birds in houses built in trees. The performance–house created by Cristina Show at Careof revisits the theme of the home, recently presented at Fondazione Ambrosetti Arte Contemporanea. The house was a spettacolo-house, and the spettacolo was achieved through optical machines.

At Careof, Cristina revisits the theme of the home, but at the same time she develops it. The house is no longer an immobile, but a mobile; no longer a noun, but a verb. The house transforms into an act of inhabiting and of constructing.

The builder that Daniela De Vito and Silvia Bassi, under the guidance of Prof. Aldo Spoldi, take as their model is the spider weaving its web, launching threads into the pre-existing space. Inhabiting the space care of thus means, for the eight-legged spider formed by the union of Daniela and Silvia's bodies, elaborating the staircase already present within it; stealing from the staircase its rotating rhythm, the spider develops, through the somersault and its dancing body, the floor plan of inhabiting.

The somersault, the dance, the union of bodies is not a new experience for Cristina, who already last year developed a dance performance for an exhibition in Chiasso (organized by the art critic Antonio D'Avossa), in which Daniela and Silvia, with the help of Paola, rolling, gave life to a true ballet, documented in the exhibition by a video.

A second work by Cristina is the gift sculpture designed by Tiziana Tettamanti, under the guidance of Prof. Aldo Spoldi, in collaboration with the company Cavalli Elettroerosioni of Rovato. The gift sculpture is a European Arlocchino that seeks to unite the beauty proper to modern art with the necessary and the useful that belong to the postmodern period.

Bio

Cristina Show is a virtual and multimedia artist, designed according to the parameters of Maastricht and funded through FIB 30. Coordinated by Prof. Aldo Spoldi, she was born from a competition proposed in the A.Y. 1996/97 to the students and faculty of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera by B.D.O. LTD. Cristina Show—able to rely on technicians, professionals, and the creativity of students—has demonstrated in these first years of existence her ability to engage with the art system. The images, objects, and performances she has created range from eroticism to the care of mental illness, from a project for a commercial childhood to the creation of choreographies and performance-ballets, as well as the study and design of furnishing objects. The students collaborating on the project, under the guidance of Prof. Aldo Spoldi, are working to give her a face and an artistic production. Cristina Show is involved in the design of everyday objects (tableware, coffee sets, household items, lamps...) derived from her virtual body. The themes Cristina Show explores, some of which explicitly reference Bauhaus research, aim to overturn the logic of Duchamp’s ready-made—from utility to beauty—by moving instead from beauty to the everyday.
