Now reaching its twentieth issue, Work celebrates this milestone with a special double issue dedicated to young Italian and regional art. For this particular occasion, the magazine “Work”, usually focused on the activities of the Galleria Civica, abandons its traditional format to become a kind of double dictionary of 176 pages.
The first part consists of the Speciale Trentino Alto Adige/Südtirol, where forty young artists from Trentino and Alto Adige were selected to represent the emerging local scene.
The regional section is curated, based on recommendations collected from young critics working in the area, by Denis Isaia, an independent curator based in Bolzano, and Cristina Natalicchio, curator at the Galleria Civica di Arte Contemporanea di Trento.
The second section is a substantial Speciale Italia dedicated to an equal number of nationally renowned artists, realized with the collaboration of the associations Careof and Viafarini in Milan, both long committed to promoting the Italian art scene through tools such as the Archivio Artisti and the Archivio Video of the Centro di Documentazione Arti Visive (www.portfolioonline.it and www.italianarea.it).
The national selection, like the regional one, although more rigorous in terms of age and adopted criteria, was conducted through an extensive investigative process: the curators Chiara Agnello (Careof), Milovan Farronato (Viafarini), and Cristina Natalicchio intersected and narrowed down the lists of thirty-five curators active in various areas of the country, invited to indicate the artists they consider most promising.
Each selected artist is given two dense pages in the magazine, with an unpublished interview, a short bio, and images of their works.

The special issue of Work. Art in progress is conceived and produced with the upcoming Manifesta7 biennial in Trentino-Alto Adige in mind. Its goal is to draw the attention of professionals to the Italian artistic scene: recent biennials have shown the low regard of the international art criticism community, demonstrated by the near-total absence of Italian artists in the exhibitions of Kassel, Münster, Istanbul, Athens, and Lyon. This lack is certainly not due to a shortage of valid artists, but rather to an insufficient promotional strategy on their behalf.
Far from aiming to solve the problems of contemporary Italian art, the special edition intends to serve as a useful tool, at least as a first introduction. Fully aware – even to the benefit of those excluded – that it will by no means be a definitive text.
