The volume, published for the biblioteca d’arte contemporanea by Silvana Editoriale (Cinisello Balsamo, Milan 2008), addresses the relationship between cinema and visual arts, as it has evolved in the contemporary landscape. One of the distinctive features of the era we live in is the explicit and constant reference to cinematic imagery, whose sphere of influence has further expanded to involve not only mass cultural processes but also the more exclusive domain of visual arts. The aim of the book is therefore to examine along which directions the potential of cinematic language has developed within visual arts, and what forms of representation it has given rise to.

The first two chapters examine the evolution of the film medium in artistic experimentation, from the early twentieth century up to the neo-avant-garde movements of the 1960s and 1970s. Some of the philosophical theories that have helped highlight the speculative nature of cinema, which has become a fertile ground for research for many artists, as well as the changes introduced by the advent of digital technologies, are then examined. The following chapters analyze in greater detail the production of individual artists, selected from contemporary international production, divided by themes and hypotheses. The volume also collects some conversations with artists, critics, and filmmakers, such as Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Fabio Mauri, Ian White, Marco Senaldi, which reveal the variety and complexity of the ongoing debate.
