The book documents the long series of actions through which Cesare Viel (Torino, 1964) has conceived his work since 1996 as a performative practice, a process in progress, and the construction of an expanded system of relationships between artist, audience, and places. Eleven actions are narrated through descriptions, photographs, and texts. The volume is enriched by an extensive critical anthology and a detailed chronology.
The themes that Cesare Viel investigates—through border procedures both linguistic and conceptual—recur in his actions in different modes: the feminine; the word in its various possibilities ranging from writing, music, to reportage; the body, gesture, and voice; research on otherness, self-identification, and new forms of identity. The book, introduced by an essay by Carla Subrizi, is part of a publishing project by Fondazione Baruchello that focuses on key aspects of artistic practices from recent decades, through the work of some of the most innovative artists in the current art scene.
