The Mobile Archive

CURATED BY
Galit Eilat and Gabi Scardi

From 24.03 to 18.04.2009

Careof and Viafarini, at the invitation of Gabi Scardi, present The Mobile Archive in Milan from March 24 to April 18, 2009, a video art and digital media archive based in Holon, Israel. The exhibition consists of a selection of videos screened in the exhibition spaces of the two organizations.

The public is also invited to freely browse the archive as if it were a library. Visitors will be able to create their own video program. The curated video selections screened will change on a weekly basis.

The program will be enriched by lectures held by artists and prominent figures from the Israeli cultural scene. The first event, on the occasion of the opening, features the director of the Israeli Center for Digital Art, Galit Eilat, who will give a lecture at DOCVA.

Subsequently, on Monday, March 30 at 6:00 PM, artist Roee Rosen (Rehovot, 1963) will speak in conversation with Antonio Somaini, professor of cinema and visual arts.

The Mobile Archive is a project initiated in March 2007 by the Israeli Center for Digital Art, which currently includes over 1,500 video and multimedia works.

The Milan exhibition will be an important opportunity to add a selection of videos by Italian artists from the Careof Archive to the collection. At the end of its international journey, the archive—thus enriched—will return to Holon.

The Mobile Archive is based on three fundamental principles:

  • the opening of the entire archive to the widest possible audience: each visitor is given the opportunity to directly select the materials to view. The archive is presented in the form of a video library. Visitors can freely choose among the videos and view the selected works.

  • the presentation of video programs around the world curated either by the Israeli Center for Digital Art or by different curators.

  • the continuous expansion of the archive through the selection of 25 new works proposed by the curators of the host organizations.

To date, The Mobile Archive has been exhibited at Kunstverein in Hamburg, Halle für Kunst in Lüneburg, Germany, WYSPA Institute of Art in Gdansk, Poland, WHW’s Gallery Nova in Zagreb, Croatia, Glasgow School of Art, Scotland, and IUAV in Venice.

Lecture on Tuesday, March 24 at 6:00 PM with Galit Eilat, director of the Israeli Center for Digital Art, and Monday, March 30 at 6:00 PM with Roee Rosen, artist, and Antonio Somaini, professor of cinema and visual arts.
