Valerio Rocco Orlando • Lover's Discourse

2.03.2011 | 19:00

Valerio Rocco Orlando presents at Careof the first chapter of a cycle born during a six-month residency at the International Studio & Curatorial Program in New York.

In Lover’s Discourse, young couples in love discuss the relationship between individual and couple identity within the Williamsburg (New York) community. The video installation is accompanied by multiple materials produced during the development of the work (photographs, audio recordings, texts…). On the occasion of the presentation of the American project, Valerio Rocco Orlando begins production of a new chapter of the cycle, focused on Milan’s Chinatown, the neighborhood where the artist has lived for years, just a few meters from the Fabbrica del Vapore. The video will originate from a series of interviews with Chinese couples in love, who meet and marry here, often without engaging with the surrounding territory. Through a widespread distribution of flyers and the involvement of some mediators within the community, the artist will attempt to understand the dynamics that drive the relationships of a new generation of immigrants and their relationship with the local culture. On Wednesday, March 2, 2011, at 7 p.m., on the occasion of the exhibition opening, the artist will have a conversation with the critic Paola Nicolin.

Lover’s Discourse is part of the video production cycle on the city of Milan, Ritratti. Percorsi video a Milano, which Careof commissions each year to Italian and international artists. The productions realized to date are Memoria Esterna (2007) by ZimmerFrei, Matter in Motion (2008) by Semiconductor, Paradigma Indiziario (2009) by Meris Angioletti.
