Protest!

1:1projects chez Careof

From 15.02.2011 to 26.02.2011

How do protest images enter the language of artists, and how does art contribute to the creation of an imaginary linked to political and social protests?

Images can have more influence than any speech, article, or treatise. The production of an image can be a step towards solving a problem, because no social issue escapes its own representation. But images, like protests, have power only if they are distributed, giving concreteness to actions and identity to the groups that promote them. Actions have no political power if they are not documented and if the documentation is not widely distributed. When not transmitted in the form of an image, the political potential of protest is deactivated.

Of the countless stories that can be told, interpreting an archive as a tool for analyzing reality, 1:1projects has chosen to work with a selection of artist dossiers present in its archive, photocopies of ongoing research, and a public meeting.

Portfolio by: Francesco Arena, Johanna Billing, Rossella Biscotti, Tim Brennan, Gea Casolaro, Carla Cruz, Harrell Fletcher, FormaZero, Silvia Giambrone, goldiechiari, gruppo estraneo permanente, Jeanne van Heejswick, Hristina Ivanoska, Liquid Cat/Postcards from Beirut, Cesare Pietroiusti, Andrea Savino, Cindy Smith, Carlo Steiner, Valentina Vetturi, Inga Zimprich.

Texts available for consultation by: Gregg Bordowitz, General Idea, Gran Fury, Group Material, Tim Rollins & K.O.S, Martha Rosler, Kaja Silverman, Mierle Laderman Ukeles et al.

The archive of 1:1projects contains portfolios and audio and video materials by Italian and international artists, and was conceived as a research tool available to students, artists, curators, and critics who wish to deepen their knowledge of contemporary artistic practices, but also as an active tool through which to question and narrate reality. Since July 2010 the association has no fixed location, and the contexts where the archive is hosted become production sites for the group.

Protest! is the result of a dialogue between Careof and 1:1projects, two contemporary art organizations engaged in the promotion and documentation of artistic creation through various tools, first and foremost the archive.
