Event created on the occasion of Milano & Oltre. Una visione in movimento

Careof, invited to participate in the exhibition-event Milano & Oltre. Una visione in movimento, presents a project it has supported since 2011, representative of a participatory and transversal working practice: Cantiere per pratiche non-affermative.
Cantiere per pratiche non-affermative is a group of young designers that was formed during an artist residency at Careof, a non-profit art space in Milan, as part of the FDV Residency Program. The name highlights its focus on problematizing and constructing new narratives, orienting itself toward value systems alternative to those embedded in the current market economy, with the aim of redefining new models of design through a critical approach.

During the event, members of the collective present and discuss the outcomes of Designers’ Inquiry, a research project on the social and economic profile of designers, begun in April 2012 and concluded during the Salone del Mobile 2013 with the release of the publication.
Starting from the inquiry and thanks to the contributions of the invited participants, the meeting represents a further step in a complex journey aimed at imagining possible forms of intervention needed to improve the socio-economic conditions of designers in Italy, identifying potential synergies among knowledge workers active in different fields.

The chosen format is that of an informal discussion around a large table, in a way similar to the conversation format around the dining table that the collective has organized several times during their residency at Careof ("A tavola con…").

With the support of the Comune di Milano and Fondazione Cariplo.

Bio

Cantiere per pratiche non-affermative is a research group made up of young designers, formed during an artist residency as part of the FDV Residency Program, with the aim of redefining new models of design through a critical approach. As the group's name suggests, Cantiere per pratiche non-affermative is interested not so much in the production of objects, but rather in processes, languages, and collective imaginaries, developing a working method that, from its original base in Milan (where they continue to operate), expands into university classrooms, publishing, and festivals. The formats are always different: from meetings around a dining table — A tavola con … — with representatives from the design world, to seminars on social imagination, on freelance labor regulations, to moments of dialogue on new forms of resistance with Wu-Ming and Serpica Naro, all the way to the creation of the Cantieroteca, an expanding archive of publications and a point of reference for this type of research.
