Lorenzo Casali e Micol Rubini • Vicino/Attraverso

From 27.05 to 14.06.2013

curated by
Gabi Scardi

Careof presents Vicino/Attraverso, a solo exhibition by Lorenzo Casali and Micol Rubini offering an overview of the video and installation works created by the artists since 2010.

The meticulous and precise gaze of Lorenzo Casali and Micol Rubini focuses on territories considered marginal not only geographically but also mentally: from forests 450 km north of Helsinki, to the course of a stream in the Vallecamonica Alps, from the outskirts to the border of the countryside in Cork, to Northern European rivers observed from a cargo ship.

From these contexts, apparently natural but in reality heavily anthropized, from phenomena seemingly spontaneous but actually culturally given, the two artists reveal the latent yet profound tensions and violence they are imbued with.

Their works arise from a critical and poetic observation of the landscape and combine attention to the signs and sounds present in the space; visual rigor coexists with extreme attention to sound, which is recorded during filming and then reworked in post-production. Through their works, Lorenzo Casali and Micol Rubini speak about our time, question our responsibilities, and invite listening and active participation in the context in which we live.

The exhibition Vicino/Attraverso includes a selection of video works created since 2010: Ignition, Atlante Silvestre, and Green Gold, the latter accompanied by an artist book published alongside the video and the audio track Al crepuscolo. Traveling on the lunar surface, an installation composed of a slide projection and a sound track that relates to the Careof space, is their most recent work and the first part of an ongoing project started in 2013 about the Rhine River. Completing the path are two individual video works from 2009, Safely Unknown and Permanence#2, both shot inside homes where objects, inert, float in a suspended time.
