May Invitational
Launched in May 2013, May Invitational is an invitation program dedicated to exploring Italian and international art initiatives that complementarily articulate independent and non-profit strategies for cultural production and research within the field of contemporary visual culture.
The 2014 edition of May Invitational features the collaboration between Viafarini and Careof in a cohesive program curated by Martina Angelotti and Simone Frangi, designed with the ambition to establish in the shared spaces of the two associations at Fabbrica del Vapore a platform, a physical and virtual forum to investigate – through four solo presentations – the complex mechanisms of research and sustainability of different project experiences, by nature and structure.
Starting from May 9, every week, different projects and spaces will be invited to present their practice in a set designed by Canedicoda and to leave a visual trace that strengthens and thematizes the collective discourse; an overlap of experiences aimed at generating comparison and evaluating their own practices, in an attempt to visually reflect a heterogeneous constellation of processes and research.
Preceded by an informal round table with the three foreign curators currently in residence at Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo and closed by a live performance by Wolf Eyes organized in collaboration with Piattaforma Fantastica, May Invitational combines the exhibition program with moments of shared in-depth discussion, turning the four meetings into dialogue zones for Milanese and international operators as well as informational hubs and convivial gathering points for the public. The installed set will be open to visitors until June 13.

Residency
Margarida Mendes
25.03 > 28.05.2014
In collaboration with: Barber Shop, Peep Hole, Fondazione Adolfo Pini
During her stay, Margarida Mendes engaged with the artistic research of the Italian scene and developed the first of a series of installations based on vernacular structures that can produce shade and shelter, proposing a space dedicated to relationships and ephemeral encounters.
Furthermore, as part of the May Invitational talk series, organized by Careof and Viafarini, she presented the concepts behind the project space The Barber Shop in Lisbon, discussing some of its key research and action strategies.
The discussion focused on experimental methodologies for the production of knowledge and explored the relevance of artistic research practices as tools for social transformation.
