Fiamme negli Archivi. Frammenti nella memoria di canepovolto
CURAED BY

From 28.02.2017 to 2.04.2017
To mark its thirtieth anniversary, Careof turns its attention to the theme of the archive, envisioning an exhibition that is not merely a static, didactic form of historicization, but rather a curvilinear path that surfs through the languages and devices that have shaped the production of moving images and sounds over the past three decades.
canecapovolto is the architect of this immersion. With their own (nearly) thirty-year-long production, which continues uninterrupted in the vast South of Italy, and their constant attention to media, tools, and devices, the group has been invited to create a solo show that adds an idea of the archive to the archive itself—through a personal journey shaped not only by the selection of works, but also by the means of reproduction involved.
Over the years, canecapovolto has explored various recording, editing, and playback tools. At the same time, those who have followed their work have experienced it via a range of formats: from old VHS tapes on cathode ray tube TVs, to DVDs on LCD monitors, and finally, video files on streaming platforms. This evolution has not only altered the intimate, personal perception of viewing but has also impacted the collective availability of the video "product," shifting the practice from ownership to access.
Their archive of images and sounds is always alive and available—almost always on fire. It never interrupts that vital line that continuously regenerates within the timeline of their thought.
Fiamme negli archivi also presents a selection from the sound archive produced by the Scuola FuoriNorma, a multidisciplinary program founded by canecapovolto to maintain a constant relationship between theoretical studies and creative work practices. The sound archive will be available throughout the duration of the exhibition to sensitive ears and for free download.
ARTIST BIO
Canecapovolto was born in Catania in 1992.
In a continuos experimentation, supported by the use of different tools and media, as acoustic films, video, installations, happenings and collages, canecapovolto develops an investigation on the expressive possibilities of vision and perception, using original techniques to treat and manipulate the images.
Starting from cinema, so from visual and sound experiments initially related to short film in super-8, the group resorts to using different practices of audio-video production, “sabotaging” the starting mediatic image with the aim of implementing displacement strategies. Much attention is paid to investigate the scientific matrix of communication and its spectators reaction.
