Silvia Sfligiotti offers a somatic experience of spatial exploration
During Milano Design Week 2022, Careof presents LABORATORIO, an opportunity to share the research of some of the entities within Careof LAB that work in the fields of design, architecture, and visual communication.
On display at Fabbrica del Vapore in Milan, from June 8 to 11, 2022, are the works of Martyna Di Paolo, GISTO, Hypereden, and Silvia Sfligiotti.
From the relationship between design and the body to the idea of demolition and material transformation, from the possibility of building furniture and equipment for public space using concrete and inerts, to torn paper that imitates urban surfaces: LABORATORIO showcases points of tangency and intersection among different entities capable of coexisting, cohabiting, and collaborating.
Martyna Di Paolo: Vulnerabili
Vulnerabili is a visual metaphor between urban surfaces and the vulnerability of the human being.
It is a personal project born from the observation of textures, colors, and materiality resulting from the layering of what were once advertising posters, now left to deteriorate on metal sheets scattered around the city.
The act of addition, atmospheric agents, and the gesture of removal—sometimes by workers—shape an object whose characteristics give way to an intuition that connects the human condition of vulnerability to these found urban remnants.
Aren’t we, after all, the result of experiences, words, places, numbers, and the unexpected? A stratification of information and encounters from which we sometimes wish to remove certain memories to make room for something else?
The tearing of paper reveals the truth of our human destinies which, like the metal sheets—in their inert and static appearance—live the brief existence of posters, their continuous overlapping and fading in the fragile identity of life. It echoes and reiterates the precariousness of our own lives, of our time that flows, unstoppable.
Martyna Di Paolo is a designer who lives and works in Milan.
Experimentation, curiosity, and the contemplation of unusual solutions are some of the keywords that constantly shape her research and work. She collaborates as an illustrator and consultant in the textile sector for Cabana Wallpaper and is co-founder of the brand Byobù design, a project focused on handcrafted room dividers.

GISTO: frantoio sociale
Frantoio Sociale is a research project aimed at exploring the theme of material transformation on a cultural and social level, proposing a development model inspired by the agricultural world: horizontal, open, and convivial places like oil mills, cooperative wineries, cooperative systems—structurally and ideologically opposed to “mass” production and disposal systems.
A central and necessary tool of the project is a mobile crushing machine, capable of transforming inert materials into new raw material for infinite uses.
During Milano Design Week 2022, Frantoio Sociale became itinerant, with workshops and exhibitions held in collaboration with the local territory. Five days, five public events to narrate demolition as a circular and valuable process.
Frantoio Sociale is a project by Studio GISTO (Alessandro Mason, Alice Cazzolato, Matteo Giustozzi, Pietro Lora) and Hund Studio, in collaboration with Crunchy Crusher.
Since 2010, Studio GISTO has developed projects that span design, architecture, and craftsmanship, in collaboration with institutions, companies, and other entities. Its approach focuses on local resources, material sustainability, and circular development processes.

Hypereden: Forme per il dialogo
Forme per il dialogo recounts the activities and working methods of Hypereden, which makes inhabiting and building coincide in an existential relationship, transcends the divide between public and private spheres, and incorporates the latent energies of a context into spatial transformation.
On the occasion of Milano Design Week 2022, Hypereden, together with Frantoio Sociale, collaborated with the association Giardini in Transito to create furnishings and equipment made of concrete and recovered inerts in the Giardino Comunitario Lea Garofalo. This is a long-term project to be developed over the coming years with the involvement of citizens and local organizations, through meetings and workshops. The first planned intervention is a fountain currently under construction: a symbolic element and, at the same time, a place of gathering.
Hypereden is a collective of architects and designers founded in 2011, investigating the physical and cultural identities of places, their enhancement, and their sustainable transformation over time. It operates through the tools of art, design, and architecture in the fields of landscape, urban, architectural, and interior design. Since 2016, it has been a cultural association aimed at promoting practices of revitalization and active transformation of collective spaces. It collaborates with third sector entities to initiate and coordinate both temporary and long-term spatial transformation processes, experimenting with dynamics of participation and interaction with contextual potential.

Silvia Sfligiotti: es_ design somatics
es design somatics is a project launched by Silvia Sfligiotti (Alizarina) to bring embodied knowledge into design practice and education. It emerged as a possible response to the need for rethinking the foundations of a discipline that must be reconsidered.
Drawing from bodily knowledge allows us to approach design with a richer set of sensory and relational tools, and to create more horizontal and conscious learning environments. Through texts, workshops, meetings, a newsletter, and a podcast, es offers ideas, materials, and experiences to imagine ways of designing that are more organic, open, and situated.
Silvia Sfligiotti is a graphic designer and co-founder, with Raffaella Colutto, of the visual communication studio Alizarina. She teaches at ISIA Urbino, Scuola Politecnica di Milano, and the University of the Republic of San Marino. Her research interests include the history and critique of visual communication and design education with a somatic approach.
