Bárbara Wagner and Benjamin de Burca: talk and screening
12/3/2019
7:00 PM

A public evening on the occasion of ArteVisione LAB: on Tuesday, December 3, 2019, artists Bárbara Wagner and Benjamin de Burca will present, in conversation with Martina Angelotti, their artistic research and the screening of Terremoto Santo and Swinguerra, works exhibited at the Brazilian Pavilion of the 58th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia.

Terremoto Santo (2017, 19')
An experimental short film addressing the recent wave of evangelism dominating public debate in Brazil. It focuses on the various social, economic, and aesthetic aspects of gospel music produced and performed by a young generation of believers living in the traditional sugarcane plantations of Pernambuco, Brazil. Focusing on this generation of gospel music producers and considering the moral, ethical, and aesthetic elements of their religious practice and their relationship with space, media, pop culture, and desire, Terremoto Santo is a musical that observes the gestures and voices of these people who see evangelical religion as a new form of entrepreneurship, carefully observing their faith to achieve both economic and spiritual well-being.

Swinguerra (2019, 23')
The title Swinguerra derives from the word swingueira, a popular dance rhythm originating in northeastern Brazil, combined with guerra (war). Wagner & de Burca’s works focus on the powerful expressions of popular culture in contemporary Brazil and their complex relationships with both international and local traditions. Swinguerra offers a deep and empathetic view of contemporary Brazilian culture during a period of significant political and social tension. As in their previous films, the artists collaborate with their subjects in a horizontal and respectful relationship, aware of how complex self-representation and contemporary awareness are.

After the talk, at 9:30 PM, Careof hosts, as part of NAO Performing Festival, promoted by DiDstudio, the screening of:
The choreographic | selection among dance, cinema, and visual arts
