Beto Shwafaty - The end of work

The end of work
3-channel video installation, 2019
HD video, sound, color, 20’30″
Directed by Beto Shwafaty

Focusing on the theme of the “transformation of labor,” the work takes as its starting point a confrontation between two sides of the historical and cinematic material collected by the Archivio Nazionale Cinema Impresa: on one hand, the promises of modernism and industrial development in improving living conditions; on the other, the failures and transformations of those promises as technological and automated systems took over workplaces, calling into question the role of human beings.

What impact do these shifts have on the body, subjectivity, and social life of workers? What are the transformations in terms of communal life and productive activity, particularly in relation to systems of being, care, and attention?

The End of Work unfolds as a hybrid production, straddling the line between video essay and video collage. Through the fusion of a written text, visual narration, and abstract soundtrack, the piece constructs and articulates multiple atmospheres and parallel readings—layering reflections on memory, labor, and collective transformation.

The work won the PIPA Prize (Brazil) in March 2022.
