Art & Saints

“Generic Art History & Promotion” is an association founded by three young artists in the summer of 1999. The subject of their work is the functioning of value attribution mechanisms, beginning with the idea of a generic past and, in the case of art, from history and myth understood in their generality.
In the project Art & Saints, tradition is both the object and the goal of a work that combines historiographic methodology, art, the potential of the web, and popular devotion. Countless places and categories traditionally have their own Patron Saints. Art & Saints by GAHP consists in establishing the Patron Saints of various 20th-century art movements. The attributions are not random but are based on an in-depth study of art history and of the lives and histories of the Saints.
GAHP publishes on its website a profile for each Patron Saint, creating an official image for them. From the site, users can print their own holy card. Also on the same site, there is an (ongoing) database that associates each 20th-century artist with their own Patron Saint. GAHP is also working to obtain ecclesiastical approval from the Vatican’s Imprimatur Office.
