M+M

M+M, together with a small team of actors and technicians, produced several short films shot in various locations between Germany and the United States.

The 4,290 stills that make up each of the large photographs on display convey the idea of the entire story. When viewed from a distance, the photographs reveal only the chromatic effect of the differently colored ribbons, created by the arrangement of the individual frames. A closer view, however, allows the spectator to delve into the series of richly detailed images, enabling a reading akin to a film or an enormous photo-novel. At the center of each ribbon or narrative is a protagonist, observed from various perspectives during their action or their “dolce far niente.”

The individual protagonists and events depicted in the various photographs turn out to be interconnected, collectively reconstructing fragments of a panorama of a strange yet ordinary afternoon in a generic metropolis. Among the parallel events shown in the photographs, a network of casual interactions is woven, reminiscent of the compositional techniques used in films such as Short Cuts, Magnolia, or Pulp Fiction.
