Mariateresa Sartori • Visto da qui

PRESENTATION BY
Angela Madesani
From 29.11.2004 to 05.01.2005

On November 29 at 6:30 PM, the first solo exhibition in Milan by Mariateresa Sartori opens at the Careof space. On display is the new video work Visto da qui. Progetto lettura ostacolata and the large installation La classe. Also being screened are the other videos created by Sartori to date.

In Visto da qui. Progetto lettura ostacolata, using specially created contraptions, the artist has devised a series of “exercises” that aim to make the reading of a text—prepared specifically for the occasion—difficult but not impossible. The footage was shot inside a classroom with classical furnishings and a typical rigid arrangement of desks. Each situation gave rise to multiple reflections, based on the participants' reactions: everyone struggles to understand. This effort leads to a greater degree of comprehension, which is nonetheless always relative, because “any knowledge of reality is by its very nature incomplete knowledge.”

Our efforts mostly produce a halting reading. A reading that often betrays, in tone and inflection, the difficulty in understanding even the meaning of the sentence. This halting reading, the only one humanly possible, also generates possible interpretations. It is in this way that man transforms this limitation into his own greatness.

Also in this latest video, as in the previous ones, the cold, para-scientific approach in fact reveals the warmth of an embrace of the human condition in the mix of coercion and spontaneity that characterizes it—and which in La classe, conceived for the Careof space, a wall installation made of school desks, finds another form of representation. The empty, suspended classroom carries with it the idea of the bodies that have inhabited it or will inhabit it.
