Alice Cattaneo e Andrea Sottile

On February 7, 2005, at 6:30 PM, Careof’s space in Milan (via Luigi Nono 7) will host the opening of a two-person exhibition featuring artists Alice Cattaneo and Andrea Sottile.

Alice Cattaneo—recently returned to Milan after completing her Master of Fine Arts at the San Francisco Art Institute—has created three new installations for the occasion.

Her work is introduced by a text written by Giorgio Zanchetti, professor in the Department of Art History at the University of Milan.

Andrea Sottile presents Et consumimur igni, a work in progress begun in 1997, accompanied by a text by Alessandra Galasso. The title — et consumimur igni — is taken from the well-known Latin palindrome In girum imus nocte et consumimur igni (“We go round and round in the night and are consumed by fire”), often referred to as the “devil’s phrase” due to both its meaning and its reversible structure. For the first time, the work is shown in the form of a parallelepiped, resembling an archaeological artifact awaiting to be revealed and unfolded.

In the video room, Careof presents Tent. Academy Awards 2003, a selection of some of the best video art pieces produced at Dutch and Flemish art academies.

Participating artists: Hester van Spijk (Enschede), Bibi Smink (Rotterdam), Kathelijne Reijse (Utrecht), Ilone Bruijn (Groningen), Ferdinand Maks (Breda), Casper Rila / Jordy Walker (Rotterdam), Tony Hofman (Amsterdam), Pola Brändle (Maastricht), Anne Sophie Malmberg (Arnhem), Richard Spierings (Den Bosch).
