This is a magazine. Episode 25

20.08.2008 | 20.00

Saturday, September 20, Careof inaugurates the new exhibition season with the independent editorial project This is a magazine curated/created by artists Karen ann Donnachie (Australia/England, 1970) and Andy Simionato (Australia/Italy, 1968)

Sound performance: 8:00 PM Francesco Spampinato x Sbudellatron, Unbounded // 8:30 PM My Cat is an Alien, Beyond yr shadow - I am / I am not (here?)

This is a magazine was born in Milan in 2002 and exists in various forms online and in print. Constructed each time around a different theme with heterogeneous contributions from artists and others, it is always presented in a different way and accompanied by animated gifs, PowerPoint performances, videos, flash flipbooks, QuickTime objects, artist multiples, and gadgets. This is (not) a magazine, as defined by the authors, “is an experiment in post-communication. A magazine after magazines, this is a magazine about nothing”

The exhibition at Careof — Episode 25: Activities in time and space — is conceived as a new issue of the magazine. Donnachie-Simionato play with space — no longer just the virtual space of the web but also the physical space of the gallery — like a magic box from which they bring out videos, stickers, posters, projected images, installations, and performances. Episode 25 explores the more “spiritual” aspects of technology and the internet through the blogs of the surfclub Loshadka, the social activity of aids-3d, the poetic work of Nikola Tosic, the hacker approach of Shane Hope, or the halfway point between street art and 18th-century traditional magic of Center for Tactical Magic. Yoshi Sodeoka intervenes with the sounds of the most extreme music groups, Grant Willing appropriates images from science, while Harm van den Dorpel engages the audience by projecting their image through a large diamond mirror. Oliver Laric and Damon Zucconi propose a formal work of subversion of codes.

There are two performances for the opening night: My Cat is an Alien (MCIAA) focuses on the encounter/clash between two parallel dimensions, while Francesco Spampinato, in collaboration with the duo Sbudellatron, proposes entry into another world by providing the audience with the materialization of a conduction channel toward a new space-time reality.

On www.thisisamagazine.com or www.thisisnotamagazine.com, the only information available on this occasion will be a Google map with the address of the exhibition space and a date.

Donnachie/Simionato are also authors of a series of books collecting artistic experiences on the internet; they have been awarded numerous prizes, and their works are exhibited in international museums and galleries.

Center for Tactical Magic

What is the Center for Tactical Magic? Activists?  Occultists? Conjurors? Tricksters? Contemporary artists? Martial artists? Con-artists?  “Most of the time we feel that these debates are more productive for everyone when we stay out of them and let folks figure things out on their own.”
The Center for Tactical Magic's curse sticker, distributed during the exhibition, is somewhere in between modern street graffiti and much older forms of magical resistance, such as the placing of curses on the property of feudal lords.

Damon Zucconi

Conversation between a fallen angel (Damiel) and a passer-by in Wings of Desire:
Is this red?
Yes.
And the pipes?
They're yellow.
'And him there?' [pointing at some painted figures on the Berlin Wall]
He's grey-blue.
Him?
He's orange...ochre.
Orange or ochre?
Ochre.
Red...Yellow...And him?
He's green.
And the bit above the eyes?
That's blue.

Oliver Laric is an artist living in Munich, Tokyo and Paris.
Two projects are presented in this edition; in the first Laric interviews Andy Warhol over an internet chat with a psychic medium.

Yoshi Sodeoka

Yoshi Sodeoka is a multidisciplinary artist and musician based in New York City

My Cat is an Alien

My cat is an Alien are leaders in the field of abstract drones and experimental music. Vittore Baroni described the two brothers' music as “Audio sculptures floating on a tension cable that never looses its way or grows fainter from the first instant to the last. The Beauty of noise in a sum of almost casual gestures.”

Francesco Spampinato X Sbudellatron

Unbounded is a performative project that sees, for the first time, the collaboration between Francesco Spampinato and the art-rock group Sbudellatron. On stage, one of the two members of the group will perform with a laptop while the other will intervene remotely from London with a guitar through an online connection. Unbounded aims to be a research on the meaning of distance and separation through the staging, inside a cage, of a remote musical performance. Unbounded functions as a cerebral superstructure, a form of anti-stage for a hallucinogenic synesthetic experience. The post-nuclear sound of Sbudellatron merges with the sci-fi and psychedelic imagery of Francesco Spampinato. The hula hoops foreshadow entry into a world other than the one in which the event takes place, providing the audience with the materialization of a conduction channel toward a space-time condition in which the coordinates we know collapse.
