Stefano Romano • Tremilaseicentocinquantagiorniunalinea
CURATED BY
Chiara Agnello and Alessandra Pioselli
From 12.02 to 7.03.2009
Tremilaseicentocinquantagiorniunalinea is the title of the solo exhibition that Stefano Romano has conceived for Careof. On this occasion, he presents a new, site-specific project, Untitled (2009).
Dozens of standard A4 white sheets are traversed by a single line, a hand-drawn mark, trembling and uncertain. The sheets are not hung in a regular order—their apparent sequence is constantly undermined. The installation is in fact the result of an action: sheet by sheet, Stefano Romano attempted to keep his hand steady so that, crossing and dividing the white space of the page in half, the line drawn in pen would always be positioned at the same height. But the hand falters. It makes mistakes, seeks a continuity that it does not find. The sheets are then hung one after another, joining the lines in an attempt to follow the surface of the exhibition space according to a variable, random, and unpredictable scheme.
Stefano Romano, artist and curator of the project 1.60 insurgent space, revisits in this exhibition several stages of his artistic journey through a selection of works: Landscape (2006/2008) is a personal reflection on the idea of landscape, but also a visualization of time, space, and human relationships; the landscape is defined by the names of all the people the artist met over the course of one day. Linee (2002) creates a moment of connection between two people through a game; Noi amiamo l’Albania (2005), thanks to the contribution of an architectural firm in Tirana, proposes the utopian project of a bridge across the Strait of Otranto between Albania and Italy; Movements. 1 start-ing with chairs (2007), realized as part of a series of “movements,” reveals the internal relationships of the art system through the act of bringing the chairs of Milanese gallerists from the association Start to a single location, the Triennale di Milano, on the occasion of InContemporanea.
