Corinne Mazzoli • The Gossips' Chronicles
81st Venice International Film Festival - La Biennale di Venezia
Lazzaretto Vecchio
28.08.2024 - 07.09.2024
A Careof production, winner of the 8th Edition of Biennale College Cinema – Immersive
Careof presents "The Gossips' Chronicles," a project by Corinne Mazzoli produced by Marta Bianchi, premiering worldwide from August 28 to September 7, 2024, at the 81st Venice International Film Festival - La Biennale di Venezia, Venice Immersive section, the most significant annual event dedicated to immersive arts and media.
Winner of the 8th Edition of Biennale College Cinema – Immersive (BCC-I), "The Gossips' Chronicles" is a location-based multiplayer installation that combines an IRL guided tour in a torture museum with a VR experience to tell the story of the Gossips, a now-extinct population that lived around the 5th century AD.
In the early Middle Ages, women formed a strong community, orally passing down stories and popular cultures, and were skilled healers. They were called Gossips from god-sibb, which meant close kinship. The Gossips were the “friends” (Silvia Federici, 1998). With the advent of capitalism and the strengthening of patriarchal authority, the term took on the negative connotation of female gossip. Freedom diminished, and those who rebelled against these restrictions were burned at the stake as heretics. This is the inspiration for "The Gossips' Chronicles," a guided journey that narrates two different versions of the history of artifacts displayed in a torture museum. Here, the term Gossips refers to a community of living beings, in harmony with nature and the cosmos, who are robbed of their objects for capital possession and then exterminated to destroy their memory.
The narrative develops from the torture objects that have come down to us: historical fakes, whose stories collapse, leaving room for doubts and uncertainties about where the boundaries between true and false lie.
The project has received the grant offered by the Venice Biennale, within the Biennale College-Cinema Immersive program (8th edition) made possible by the support of the Ministry of Culture and the European Union's Creative Europe program; "The Gossips' Chronicles" is also made possible thanks to the support of ADVANT Nctm, Dedar, and Swampgod.

The Venice International Film Festival - La Biennale di Venezia
The Venice International Film Festival - La Biennale di Venezia was one of the first film festivals in the world to show interest in Virtual Reality. The creation of a VR Theater in 2016 generated enormous interest among participants of the Venice Production Bridge. Starting in 2017, the Venice Biennale launched the first competition for Virtual Reality works among the major festivals, held for three editions, until 2019, on the location of the Lazzaretto Vecchio island in the Lido, with an international jury. The online accessibility of Venice VR Expanded in the 2020 and 2021 editions represented a commitment and a challenge to ensure the presence of this new art form within the Venice Film Festival even in years of necessary distancing. With the 2022 edition, the section, renamed Venice Immersive, returned to the island, renewed and expanded. From the very first editions, the section has established itself on the scene as a unique event, the most significant annual event dedicated to immersive arts and media.
All accredited participants of the Festival have access to all the titles in the program. Additionally, a special Venice Immersive accreditation is available for interested individuals over 18, allowing them to view the selected projects and is available in three formats:
2-DAYS Venice Immersive Accreditation (40 euros): valid for 2 days
5-DAYS Venice Immersive Accreditation (60 euros): valid for 5 days
FULL Venice Immersive Accreditation (100 euros): valid from August 28 to September 7
Venice Immersive accreditations are available on the official website.
